Terry at Forty Five

It was his birthday. I tried to imagine, paint what my brother Terry would have looked like at 45, with his boyish face permanent beyond, outracing the years.

I had a dream one night. The place looked like Florida, single floor buildings clustered together, cinder block walls and flat roofs. Grass, long and cool, beneath my bare feet. The screen door to the classroom opened and he came out first, then followed by a crowd of children, all standing on their tiptoes in search of his attention. Terry had become a teacher.
