Lighthouse at Sleepy Hollow, 2010, 44" x 56", oil SOLD
Steamship captains, worried about the shoals off Kingsland Point, wanted a lighthouse. But, the vineyard on the property wasn't interested. The city of New York was doubling in size again, the wine-making business was booming, and these vines weren't going anywhere. So, after thirty-six years of waiting for the price to come down, the government finally bought a cheaper plot of land (in the middle of the river) and the Sleepy Hollow/ Tarrytown Lighthouse was built. Eventually General Motors bought the vineyard and "put up a parking lot" bringing land and lighthouse close enough together, you could say, to share a glass of wine.
The tale of Irving's Headless Horseman becomes untangled at a bridge over the Pocantico River. The waters hurry past to empty into the Hudson, a bit north of the lighthouse site—just a short ride away, by horse no doubt.1233,960 -
